Church celebrates as kidnapped Akwa Ibom priest regains freedom

Rev. Fr. Alphonsius Uboh, the Catholic priest of St. Pius X Parish in Ikot Abasi Akpan, who was abducted in the Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, has regained his freedom.

A parish source on Thursday said the priest was released around 2am on Thursday.

He, however, did not say if any ransom was paid.

The cleric was kidnapped on the premises of the parish on Sunday, May 8, around 7.30pm at his residence shortly after he returned from visiting a sick member.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko McDon, said the release of the cleric had not been communicated to the command.

However, a statement issued by the Diocesan Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Charles Ekeng, on Thursday, confirmed the development.

“We, therefore, write to express our gratitude to all who offered prayers and entreaties for the quick release of our dear priest from the den of his abductors,” the statement added.
