The General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, during the monthly thanksgiving service, disclosed reasons he never fulfilled his childhood ambition of becoming a military man.
The RCCG G.O. said on Sunday while delivering his homily that he had always loved the military but was hampered by his mother.
He acknowledged the military and other security personnel who attended the service.
Taking his reading from 2 Timothy 2:3 with the theme, “enduring hardness as a good soldier of Christ”, he explained how his mother was able to restrain him from joining the force.
He said, “I wanted to be a soldier, it’s my mother who didn’t allow me.”
He narrated how he convinced his mother after his graduation so he could fulfil the dream of wearing khaki but his mother struck him by saying that he should allow her to die before he would take the decision.
In his words, “…and I told her that I wanted to join the army after I graduated (from the university), she said to me, ‘you’re my only son. I’m not asking you not to join the army, just wait till I die and you have buried me, then you can do whatever you want.”
He explained that the conversation took place in the 1960s while his mother died in the 1990s, and then it was too late for him to further the course of fulfilling that dream.
He affirmed, “It was already too late for me to join the army. But I love the army,” adding that his interest in the force has made him watch films and documentaries that had to do with the military.
He explained that soldiers pass through a lot despite their fine uniforms. He termed their training as endurance, stressing that the army passes through hardness to merit the uniform they wear.
