The Vatican Priest, Pope Francis, on Sunday, honoured the 40th anniversary of the disappearance of a 15-year-old Emanuela Orlandi.

Orlandi, according to Vatican News, was a resident of Vatican City who went missing on 22 June 1983.

Pope Francis, at the Angelus, assured the family of the disappeared Orlandi of his closeness to them.

The case of the disappeared girl has continued to resonate, especially in Italy, and has spawned numerous conspiracy theories.

While interest in the case has never been lacking, a recent documentary and this year’s anniversary have provoked renewed efforts to determine what became of Emanuela, with renewed investigations opened both by the Vatican and by Italian authorities.

Pope Francis used the opportunity to pray for all families “who bear the memory of a dear one who has disappeared.”
