Sultan warns against violent campaigns

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Sultan of Sokoto, Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar III, has given a stern warning to political parties to avoid violence as the campaign season opens.

According to The PUNCH, the Sultan, who is also the leader of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, also enjoined Nigerians to work together for peace and justice ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He stated this on Monday during the 2022 third quarter meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religion Council, held on Victoria Island, Lagos.

Abubakar said, “The role of religious leaders is to be just and fair to earn the trust of the people and I urge Muslims and Christians in the country to come together to pursue peace and justice because we are inseparable.”

Mustapha, who was represented by Dr. Maurice Mbaeri, Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Secretary of the Government of the Federation, urged religious leaders to bring about the necessary change so that Nigerians can always live in unity and harmony.

“I want to charge every one of us to work for peace that will endure and outlast us by creating functional structures for generations unborn. This structure must have the capacity to be proactive in responding to emerging issues while reinforcing longer and larger change processes. We cannot fold our hands when we see problems emerging,” he said.
