Sharia court annuls Ganduje's daughter's marriage

The marriage between the daughter of the Kano State Governor, Asiya Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and her Husband, Inuwa Uba, has been dissolved by the Sharia Court.

Asiya was married to Inuwa Uba for 16 years and the duo gave birth to four children between this period.

It would be recalled that Asiya Ganduje, daughter of Kano State governor, sought the court through her counsel, Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa, seeking the court to break her marriage on the grounds that she is fed up, and declared her willingness to pay the sum of N50,000 received as dowry.

According to The PUNCH, Umar I. Umar, counsel for the respondent, stated in his response that the plaintiff’s claim extends beyond the question of dowry alone, and that Asiya possessed various goods belonging to his client.

Counsel for Asiya stated earlier in his response on the point of law that the plaintiff will not renounce her rights to divorce.

According to the Counsel, the plaintiff filed her divorce claim on her own.

The trial judge, Mallam Abdullahi Haliru, declared in his decision that the evidence presented during the case established that the plaintiff received N50,000.

According to him, the court issued the decision based on the dowry, which is supposed to be the foundation of the marriage.

The Judge ordered Asiya to repay the dowry money of N50,000.

“The conditions the respondent earlier raised before the court should be based on Islamic Sunnah on Khul’i.

“Khul’i is strictly based on returning the dowry given to a woman, the condition should not affect her in any way, especially in giving out her wealth,” he said.

Addressing the court following the verdict, the respondent’s counsel, Umar, asked the court to provide him with records of the proceedings and stated his intention to petition the Upper Court to challenge the judgment’s analysis.
