Owo attack: How we escaped death, priest opens up

Ondo monarchs disagree over traditional festival

Father Andrew Abayomi, one of the priests at the St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo, Ondo State, has opened up on how he and some others escaped death at the hands of some unknown gunmen who attacked the church.

Religion Nigeria reported that the gunmen shot indiscriminately at worshippers, leaving many dead; men and women, including a child, as seen in one of the gory videos in circulation.

Speaking during an interview with BBC Yoruba(per Vanguard), Abayomi said the attack took place before the close of service on Sunday.

“We were about to round off service. I had even asked people to start leaving, that was how we started hearing gunshots from different angles.”

“We hide inside the church but some people had left when the attack happened. We locked ourselves in the church for 20 minutes. When we heard that they had left, we opened the church and rushed victims to the hospital,”
